How to Make Your Motions User-Friendly For Court Research Attorneys

Julie Casey joined the San Luis Obispo County Superior Court as a research attorney in February 2016. She began her legal career as an associate with Andre, Morris & Buttery in 2004, before becoming a research attorney for the Santa Maria courthouse in 2009. While working in Santa Maria, she taught courses in Legal Research, Legal Writing, and Ethics for the paralegal program at Allan Hancock College. She currently teaches Legal Research at the Santa Barbara & Ventura Colleges of Law. Julie earned her J.D. from the University of Notre Dame and an LL.M. from New York University.


Tracy Splitgerber joined the Santa Barbara Superior Court as a research attorney last century (April of 1999). She began her short litigation career as an associate with Flynn, Sheridan & Tabb in 1995, before becoming an attorney editor in for the Rutter Group later that same year. (Guess which secondary resources she likes to use!) She has presented at numerous bar association programs as well as taught courses for the paralegal program at Allan Hancock College. She currently teaches Legal Research at the Santa Barbara & Ventura Colleges of Law. Tracy earned her J.D. from California Western School of Law.   David Nyssen joined the Santa Barbara County Superior Court as a research attorney in 2007. He began his legal career in private practice with New York law firm Fried, Frank, Harris Shriver & Jacobson in 1990, and in 1992 (after developing a profound dislike for merger and acquisition practice), became a Senior Judicial Staff Attorney at the California Supreme Court, where he stayed for 15 years.  David presently teaches Criminal Law at Santa Barbara & Ventura Colleges of Law. David earned his J.D. from UC Davis School of Law.

To register for this event, please click Northern SANTA BARBARA COUNTY BAR ASSOCIATION (nsbbar.org), then select “Event Registration.”  You must register and pay online before September 22, 2021 at 9:00 a.m.  Zoom codes will be sent to you the morning of the program. Materials to follow on another date.


The Northern Santa Barbara County Bar Association is a State Bar-approved MCLE provider. This program qualifies for one (1) hour of MCLE credit. MCLE Certificates will be emailed to all attendees following the program.
